Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, Reuters reports.
It was their first in-person meeting.
Wang is in Malaysia to attend a series of meetings, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, China, Japan and South Korea (ASEAN Plus Three countries or 10+3) Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Thursday.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday (July 11) said his meeting with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi was "very constructive" but that the two sides still had "issues" to resolve.
Rubio added that there was a "high probability" of a meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, but no date has been discussed.
Washington's top diplomat is in Malaysia on his first trip to Asia since taking office, attending the East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum alongside counterparts from Japan, China, South Korea, Russia, Australia, India, the European Union and Southeast Asian states.
His meeting with Wang Yi comes amid escalating friction globally over Trump's tariffs, with China this week warning the United States against reinstating hefty levies on its goods next month.
