On October 31, during the trilateral meeting in Sochi, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan presented the proposal of the Nagorno-Karabakh authorities, that is, to create a demilitarized zone around Nagorno-Karabakh, with international guarantees. Today, answering the questions of the Public TV Company, Pashinyan touched on that topic as well.
“I made that offer. I think it will become a subject of discussion in the future,” said Pashinyan.
A demilitarization proposal was also made for the Armenia-Azerbaijan border zone, proposing to withdraw the troops from the re-established border in 1991, creating a 3-kilometer demilitarized zone on both sides of the border. That proposal continues to be valid, and the Armenian side has already passed its updated version to Azerbaijan.
“We made the same offer as we did in 2021. This time we made the proposal in more detail, that if we accept the border line of 1991, and now, as it was recorded in Prague and Sochi, we have accepted it, then we should mutually withdraw our troops from that border line.
In other words, that line, which is known to the whole world, beyond that line, Armenia should not have troops, Azerbaijan should not have troops on this side of that line. We propose to create a 3 km demilitarized zone. It means that the army units should be withdrawn from that 3 km zone, instead the protection of that area should be handed over to the border guard troops,” said the Prime Minister of Armenia.
