Azerbaijan has not yet applied to join the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in observer status. Alexander Bikantov, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation announced this on Thursday at a briefing.
“I can say that the states and members of CSTO have taken a course towards increasing openness, including in the information sphere, and expanding the organization's external relations,” he said. “Documents are adopted that provide the possibility of various interested countries being involved in the activities of CSTO as partners or observers. Such decisions are made, as you know, by consensus. Azerbaijan has not submitted such an application so far.”
As noted by Bikantov, the Russian Federation expects that “building up equal and constructive cooperation with other states and international structures will help increase confidence and strengthen security in the area that is within the CSTO’s sphere of responsibility.”
