Turkey is one of the three countries with the highest number of imprisoned intellectuals in the world. This became known from the report of Freedom of Writing 2020 published by the US branch of the International PEN Writers Association, ermenihaber reports.
According to the published data, China is in the first place, where 81 intellectuals are imprisoned, Saudi Arabia is in the second place with 32 imprisoned intellectuals, and Turkey is in the third place with 25 intellectuals.
The report says that as a result of the amnesty announced in Turkey in 2020, convicted criminals were released, but no political prisoners.
According to a report published by the International Federation of Journalists, as of March 2021, Turkey is the country with the most imprisoned journalists in the world - 67 journalists.
The Council of Europe 2020 report on imprisonment states that Turkey ranks first among the 47 countries of the Council in terms of the number of prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants.
