Polish authorities expect an escalation of Russian actions in the coming weeks and months, according to the Polish website Goniec.pl.
Poland is preparing for a possible escalation of Russian actions amid attacks near the Ukrainian-Polish border. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that what is happening indicates that the escalation is entering a new phase and called for possible further scenarios to be taken into account.
Speaking after a special meeting at the Government Security Center, the head of the Polish government noted that Russian activity is getting increasingly closer to the Polish border.
“Escalation from Russia has become a fact, and its examples are getting increasingly closer to our border,” Tusk said.
According to him, Polish and allied services had warned in advance about a possible escalation of Russian actions. The authorities expected attempts to disrupt the operation of Ukrainian border crossing points.
“We had information from our own and allied services about a possible escalation. Attempts to paralyze border crossings are not the first such incident; we saw this in Moldova. We knew that the Russian plan would include attempts to disrupt, paralyze and perhaps even destroy Ukrainian border crossing points," Tusk said.
The prime minister separately addressed forecasts for the coming period. He noted that the Polish authorities would operate under an enhanced regime, as they expect further activity from Russia.
Tusk said that Poland intends to significantly strengthen its actions in the security sphere, as it expects further Russian activity.
“The coming weeks and months will be a period of intensified actions from the Russian side,” the prime minister said.
He added that Warsaw cannot rule out the possibility of the escalation spreading to Polish territory.
Tusk expressed hope that such a scenario would not materialize, but noted that recent events confirm the information that the Polish authorities have been receiving for several months.
According to him, it is necessary to take into account even the most unfavorable scenarios for the development of the situation.
Tusk stressed that Poland must be prepared for possible developments and further actions from Russia.
