US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that the United States will use frozen Iranian assets to pay for damage Iran causes to its Gulf allies.
"Any tolls paid to the Persian Gulf Strait Authority will be offset by funds extracted from their accounts," Bessent wrote on X.
"Every attack Iran launches will only deepen the economic and financial consequences it faces," he added.
Tehran has demanded the return of approximately $24 billion in frozen assets and war compensation as part of ongoing peace negotiations.
Iran Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated earlier this week that the US cannot use the country’s frozen assets to help regional allies rebuild from war damage.
"Iran’s assets are neither Washington’s war spoils nor a fund for paying its allies," he said on X.
