U.S. President Donald Trump was heard on a tele-rally with Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burn Jones saying that the U.S. had ended the war, with Iran agreeing to never having a nuclear weapon, Reuters reports.
"I don't know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today. And they have agreed never to have a nuclear weapon. Something that we insisted on. That was the whole purpose. That was 95% of it and they've done it in the most powerful way you can do it," Trump was heard saying.
Jones said on his Facebook page he joined a tele-rally call with Trump at 7:00 p.m. local time (2300 GMT) on Thursday (June 11). Roughly an hour later, at 8:00 p.m. local time (0000 GMT on June 12), Jones published a recording of the tele-rally on his YouTube channel.
Trump was reported to have said on Thursday said the United States and Iran could sign a peace deal as soon as this weekend that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, but Iran countered that it had not reached a final decision on an agreement.
The deal, if confirmed, would be the most significant diplomatic breakthrough yet to end the three-month-old war, which has killed thousands and sent global energy prices sharply higher.
