U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he would not allow individuals such as the man who opened fire during a reception attended by him to alter the course of the United States.
“We will not allow people like this to change the course of our country,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News.
He expressed hope that Americans would be able to unite and act together, while also pledging to “stand by them.”
The incident occurred at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
Trump had decided to attend the event for the first time during his two presidential terms. The U.S. President said that he and members of his administration are safe, while the perpetrator has been arrested.
Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old California resident Cole Thomas Allen.
