The US Senate on Wednesday voted 47-52 against advancing a Democratic-backed war powers resolution that sought to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to use military force against Iran.
The measure, introduced by Senator Tammy Duckworth, failed to secure enough support to proceed to a full vote. Similar efforts to rein in Trump’s war powers have failed multiple times since early March.
The vote came as Trump said the war launched with Israel against Iran on Feb. 28 was “nearly over,” with a fragile ceasefire holding and efforts underway to revive peace talks.
A first round of Pakistan-mediated talks ended without a breakthrough, though further negotiations are expected. Washington has expressed optimism about a deal while warning of tougher sanctions on Iranian oil buyers, as a US naval blockade continues to restrict shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Key sticking points remain Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief, while ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon risk complicating diplomatic efforts.
