Iran's Assembly of Experts has begun the process of selecting the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
Mahmoud Rajabi, a member of the Assembly of Experts, confirmed the start of work on determining the successor, TASS reports.
"The process of selecting the [new] leader of the [Islamic] Revolution [in Iran] has begun, and the final news will be announced through the secretariat of the Assembly of Experts," Rajabi said.
The Assembly of Experts is a consultative body responsible for appointing Iran's Supreme Leader. It comprises 88 theologians and jurists, who are elected for an eight-year term.
According to Article 111 of the Iranian constitution, these experts are obligated to appoint a new Supreme Leader as soon as possible in the event of the death, resignation, or dismissal of the Supreme Leader.
American media consider Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, to be one of the favorites in the race for the post of new Supreme Leader of Iran.
