The United States wants to review a 1951 treaty with Denmark to remove restrictions on its military presence in Greenland, Bloomberg reported, citing senior sources.
The current treaty, amended in 2004, obliges the US to “consult and notify” Denmark and Greenland before making significant changes to the US military presence on the island.
“American negotiators want to review the wording to ensure that the US does not face any restrictions in implementing its plans,” the agency reported, citing its sources.
It was earlier reported that the treaty, drafted by US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, provides for the deployment of US missiles in Greenland, as well as Washington’s right to extract minerals from the island.
