Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has informed the United States that he will be ready to leave the position of head of state in a year and a half, a source claimed, CNN reports.
During informal negotiations with the US, Maduro stated that he is ultimately ready to resign, but not earlier than 18 months from now, the report says.
According to CNN’s information, Venezuelan representatives and Maduro himself have contacted the US through various channels regarding possible interactions between the two countries.
The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, had previously reported that during a conversation, US President Donald Trump told Maduro that if he does not step down voluntarily, the US will consider various options, including the use of force.
For its part, The New York Times reported that Trump had a phone call with Maduro and discussed with him the possibility of a personal meeting.
The conversation took place late in the week, two sources familiar with the negotiations said. During it, the possibility of a personal meeting between the two leaders in the US was discussed.
Trump confirmed the fact of the phone call with Maduro, but declined to comment on it.
