Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan is in Brazil to participate in the UN Climate Change Conference – COP30 – in Belem.
“As part of the visit, I met with Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, Executive Director of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD). I welcomed the launch of the new process for submitting financing applications for developing countries (BIM CFR), emphasizing that this is an important turning point for the fund’s activities and for strengthening its role in the international climate finance system. We both noted that the fund is an important tool, especially for countries most vulnerable to climate impacts, helping to address both economic and non-economic losses and damages,” the minister wrote on social media.
During the meeting, Hambardzum Matevosyan presented Armenia’s climate risks and the losses and damages experienced in recent years. He noted that Armenia is determined in its climate policy actions and, given the necessary financial support, is ready to move forward quickly.
Regarding future cooperation with the FRLD, the minister stated that Armenia has already developed two project concepts and plans to submit its first financing application to the fund in the near future.
The discussion also comprehensively covered organizational issues related to hosting the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan.
“I presented the vision and agenda for the 2026 conference in Yerevan, as a platform that brings together the directions of management of biodiversity, climate, soil, plastics, chemicals, and waste, contributing to more coordinated and effective international cooperation. I again invited partners to participate in COP17, emphasizing the conference’s importance for ecosystem-based solutions, biodiversity conservation, and advancing the global environmental agenda,” Hambardzum Matevosyan concluded.
