Low-income U.S. residents sue Trump administration demanding immediate food assistance measures,
Bloomberg reports.
According to the agency, more than 40 million Americans are facing delays in receiving food assistance due to the federal government shutdown.
The plaintiffs argued that the law requires timely and full payment of benefits even in the absence of an approved budget. Low-income Americans stated that they should not be left without food because of political disagreements among lawmakers in Congress.
The U.S. government shutdown began on October 1 and has already become the longest in the country’s history. It occurred as a result of disputes between Republicans and Democrats over spending issues.
Representatives of the ruling Republican and opposition Democratic parties in Congress have been unable to reach an agreement on a number of spending items, including healthcare. Both Democrats and Republicans have accused each other of instigating and prolonging the shutdown for political reasons.
