Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday congratulated US President Donald Trump on his successful mediation in the Gaza conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, DPA reports.
"This is a strong result," Zelensky wrote on Telegram after a phone call with the US president.
Just over two years after the start of the Gaza war, Trump brokered a ceasefire on Friday between the Israeli government and Hamas.
The peace plan is expected to lead to the release of hostages kidnapped from Israel in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
This success in the Middle East could also be repeated elsewhere, according to Zelensky.
"If it is possible to stop the war in this region [the Middle East], then surely other wars can also be stopped, such as this war with Russia [in Ukraine]."
Even before taking office in January, Trump repeatedly claimed that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours.
However, his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in August failed to produce any tangible results, as Moscow continues to insist on its maximum demands for ending the war.
In the telephone call with Trump, Zelensky said he informed him about the latest Russian attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector.
The leaders also discussed strengthening Ukraine's air defences, he said: "There are good options and strong ideas on how to strengthen us."
