U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday (October 9) hailed his administration's role in securing the release of 20 hostages held in the Middle East, calling it a historic achievement and signaling progress toward broader peace efforts, Reuters reports.
During a cabinet meeting, Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Trump's commitment, saying the release marked "an historic moment" for the country. Trump confirmed he had been invited to speak at Israel's Knesset during his upcoming Middle East trip, noting, "It's the first time a president has ever done that."
Trump said celebrations had erupted across Israel and Arab nations following the hostages' release and outlined plans to improve Gaza's living conditions, with wealthy nations contributing financially. On a two-state solution, he said, "I don't have a view. I'm going to go with what they agree to."
The president declined to elaborate on the next phases of the peace process but expressed optimism about disarmament and other agreements.
Hamas is expected to release the 20 living hostages together, 72 hours after the ceasefire begins.
