In an interview with TRT, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan commented on the latest developments in the Middle East, particularly the situation in Gaza and Syria.
Referring to U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan for a settlement in Gaza, the Turkish diplomat stated that the United States is shifting from a position of unconditional support for Israel to that of a mediator. At the same time, he noted that the possibility of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sabotaging the negotiations remains.
Fidan emphasized that the main reason for the prolonged conflicts in the Middle East is the inability of regional countries to cooperate and a certain level of mutual distrust.
Meanwhile, the Anadolu Agency reported that the foreign ministers of Türkiye, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt have issued a joint statement expressing support for the steps taken by Hamas in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The foreign ministers underlined that Hamas has agreed to Trump’s proposal, which calls for an end to hostilities, the release of all captives—alive or dead—and the immediate start of negotiations on the mechanisms for implementing the plan.
