A court has arrested former Georgian Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze. This was reported on September 13 by the Interpressnews agency (recognized as a foreign agent in Russia).
"Former Defense Minister Dzhuansher Burchuladze, accused of abuse of power and legalizing illegal income, was given a preventive measure in the form of imprisonment," the article says.
It was established that in 2023, he abused his official position and, with the help of a deputy, relative and former head of the procurement department of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia, provided medical equipment totaling more than 2.6 million lari (over $966 thousand) to the military hospital instead of 3.94 million (over $1.4 million). As a result, the material damage to the ministry amounted to more than 1.3 million lari (more than $483 thousand).
It is also specified that in March of this year Burchuladze and his wife purchased real estate from Spain for € 544 thousand. In order to conceal the origin of the property and give it a legal form, the couple signed a fictitious contract for the purchase and sale of real estate in Tskhinvali.
In total, Burchuladze is accused of legalizing illegal and undocumented income in the amount of almost 1.6 million lari ($591,974). The article under which he is accused implies imprisonment for a term of nine to 13 years.
