Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, arrived in Iceland on Thursday morning ahead of meetings with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, amid ongoing discussions around EU accession, security cooperation and trade.
Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir welcomed von der Leyen at Reykjavík Airport, before the pair boarded an Icelandic Coast Guard helicopter to Þingvellir and Grindavík.
Von der Leyen is scheduled to tour Grindavík, where she will learn about the activities of the Civil Protection Agency and the resilience of society.
She is also planning to visit the defence fortifications at Svartsengi.
Von der Leyen will then meet the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the security area at Keflavík Airport in the afternoon to discuss further defence and security issues. Security challenges in Europe and the Arctic, including defense, NATO ties, and critical infrastructure were due to be on the agenda of talks.
