On July 5, Armenia celebrates Constitution Day.
On July 5, 1995, for the first time in the history of independent Armenia, a nationwide referendum was held to adopt the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia. It was adopted almost unanimously.
The Constitution finally declared the Republic of Armenia a democratic, social, legal state, and clearly separated the functions of the three branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial).
The Constitution enshrined the rights and freedoms of man and citizen.
In recent years, the country's basic law has been amended twice through referendums: It was first changed by referendum on November 27, 2005. The latest constitutional amendments took place on December 6, 2015.
With the amendment, Armenia transitioned from a semi-presidential model of government to a parliamentary model of government.
By the decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia of July 4, 2013, July 5 is celebrated not only as the Day of the Constitution, but also as the Day of State Symbols.
