US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has said the United States will seek a comprehensive peace deal with Iran in upcoming talks but will not accept its uranium enrichment nor the possession of nuclear weapons.
At a news conference in The Hague on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump stressed that the fighting between Iran and Israel that continued from June 13 was over, and said the US plans to talk with Iran next week.
On the same day, Witkoff said during an appearance on US news channel CNBC that the US is "hopeful for a comprehensive peace agreement" with Iran.
Witkoff said, "We are having conversations with the Iranians," adding, "I think that they are ready."
Witkoff emphasized that the US will not allow Iran to enrich uranium and develop nuclear weapons, calling the action "the red line" and something that "will destabilize the entire region."
He noted that Trump aims to have Israel and Arab countries normalize their diplomatic ties to stabilize the Middle East.
Witkoff explained that the talks for that purpose are underway and said, "We think we are going to have some pretty big announcements on countries" joining US peace efforts.
