A bill on the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide has been submitted to the Parliament of Moldova.
During a briefing held in parliament, MP Hayk Vardanyan, a member of the National Alternative Movement, stated that April 24 is a day of remembrance for the victims of the Armenian Genocide for Armenians around the world.
"Today, we commemorate the memory of 1.5 million innocent Armenians who were martyred and subjected to genocide by the leadership of the Ottoman Empire in 1915. They were killed simply for being Armenian and Christian. Unfortunately, Turkey has still not recognized or condemned the Armenian Genocide. Most European Union countries and six of the G7 countries have already recognized it," Vardanyan noted, adding that Moldova has yet to do so.
According to the MP, considering Moldova's aspiration to join the European Union and its commitment to shared values, the Armenian community has submitted the bill on the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide to the country's parliament. He noted that in recent years, the community has organized various events to inform the population of Moldova about what happened in the Ottoman Empire 110 years ago.
"This initiative is not the effort of an individual or a political party—it is not a political initiative. This initiative comes from the Armenian community, which has lived in the territory of Moldova since the 12th century. It comes from people who love Moldova and want it to stand alongside those countries that have had the courage to recognize the fact of the Genocide," Vardanyan said.
He called on other members of parliament to vote in favor of the submitted bill before the end of the current parliamentary term.
