Reuters. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan met with officials from the pro-Kurdish DEM Party on Thursday (April 10) to discuss what steps need to be taken in the ceasefire process with Kurdish militants.
Erdogan met Sirri Sureyya Onder and Pervin Buldan, both of whom are DEM Party lawmakers who met with PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan in prison prior to his call in February for the PKK to dissolve itself.
The meeting with Erdogan is important because it is the first time the president is discussing the issue with a member of the delegation that met Ocalan, Buldan said outside the Turkish parliament before heading to the presidency.
The meeting lasted around 85 minutes, DEM Party said. A written statement is expected later on Thursday.
The Kurdish insurgency in Turkey has killed more than 40,000 people since it began in 1984, leaving tens of thousands wounded, including Turkish security force members, militants and civilians alike.
