Syrian security forces on Thursday (March 6) sent military reinforcements to Latakia, on Syria's coast after fighters linked to ousted leader Bashar al-Assad mounted a deadly attack on government forces, authorities said, Reuters reports.
Members from Syrian security forces cheered "God is the greatest" while getting prepared to head to Latakia.
Abu Daher, one of the members said they “are heading to the coastal areas to defeat the remnants of al-Assad that targeted the brothers in the general security administration in Latakia governorate,"
Elsewhere, at least 13 members of the security forces were killed in the clashes in the coastal region of Jableh, the government-aligned Syria TV reported. The regional security chief said many members of the security forces had been killed and wounded in what he described as a well-planned attack carried out by "remnants of the Assad militias."
It marked a sharp escalation of violence against the government since the Islamist insurgents led by Sharaa's Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled Assad and seized power.
