In an effort to cut costs at the State Department, the Trump administration is considering closing a slate of US consulates and diplomatic posts around the world, three administration officials told NBC News, the latter reports.
Accordingly, the US consulates in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Pacific Islands are among those that could be shuttered.
The bulk of the consulates in Europe that could be on the chopping block are in Germany and France, according to the officials.
The officials said that Trump has reviewed a list of consulates but that no final decisions have been made and that a timeline for possible closures has yet to be set.
And the State Department has sought information from the US consulates about their overall operations.
