Acquisition of possible maps from Nagorno-Karabakh interrupted due to escalation of situation and further developments

Armenia will hand over 8 new maps of minefields in Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan and their copies will be sent to international partners, the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia reported.

The NSS recalled that Armenia, as a sign of its commitment to the peace agenda with Azerbaijan and based on humanitarian considerations, handed over 972 maps of minefields in Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijani representatives on June 12, July 3, October 19, November 1 and November 29, 2021 without preconditions.

"Following these unilateral humanitarian steps, Azerbaijan launched an information campaign accusing Armenia of providing inaccurate and incomplete maps and using these humanitarian steps to incite hatred towards Armenia. Armenian representatives have repeatedly stated at various levels that better quality maps simply do not exist. And the maps handed over to Baku were obtained from Nagorno-Karabakh servicemen," the NSS explained.

The NSS also informed that after several recent reports in Azerbaijani media about Azerbaijani citizens injured as a result of mine explosions and in continuation of the agreement reached between the Armenian Prime Minister's Office and the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration on the implementation of confidence building steps between the two states, the Armenian NSC resumed the survey of former Nagorno-Karabakh servicemen, as a result of which 8 new maps of minefields were drawn up.

In the coming days, these maps will be handed over to the Azerbaijani side through working channels. Their copies will be sent to international partners.
