The Russian Embassy to Azerbaijan reacted to the atrocity that took place in the Russian cemetery of Zabrat settlement of Sabunchi region of Baku.
“We strongly condemn the vandalism, during which around 100 graves of our compatriots were damaged. It causes resentment and anger. Given the scale of this brazen act, it's hard to call it a random act of hooliganism. It is unfortunate that this happened in Azerbaijan, which practices a policy of tolerance and multiculturalism. The nature of the case allows us to expect an official public assessment,” the statement said.
Embassy employees immediately went to the scene to study all the details. They maintain close ties with the local authorities and the Russian community of Azerbaijan.
“We would like to thank the leadership of Azerbaijan for promptly responding to this incident with the involvement of law enforcement agencies and initiating a criminal case. Assurances have been received that the broken tombstones and monuments will be restored.
We hope that the people who committed this barbaric crime will be found, brought to justice and punished in accordance with the legislation of Azerbaijan,” the statement reads.
