The European Union expresses its readiness to mobilize 17 billion euros to restore the economic situation in the Eastern Partnership region, Oliver Varhei, EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Policy, said at a press conference in Tbilisi today, Грузия Online reports.
According to this plan, Georgia will be able to attract at least 3.9 billion euros in investments. This is a third of the GDP that the country had before the coronavirus pandemic, the severe economic and budget crisis it caused.
The European Commissioner began his visit to the South Caucasus countries from Georgia. Today in Tbilisi, he met with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Speaker of the Parliament Kakha Kuchava and deputies from all parliamentary parties, as well as with representatives of the non-governmental sector. In the morning, Oliver Varhei visited the residence of the head of the Georgian Orthodox Church in Mtskheta and was received by Ilia II.
According to the European Commissioner, as a result of the negotiations, ‘five initiatives’ were allocated for Georgia. Varhei emphasized that the EU will invest in Georgia in roads and railways, in the development of power supply networks and the Internet.
In this way, the European Union will give Georgia the opportunity “to jump over several stages and join us right at the stage at which the EU is now.”
