Hungary’s new government led by Peter Magyar plans to be ready to phase out Russian gas by October 2027, the deadline set by the European Union for meeting this goal, Hungarian Minister of Economy and Energy Istvan Kapitany said in an interview with the Telex internet media outlet, TASS reports.
Asked whether Hungary would be able to halt pipeline gas supplies from Russia by next October as demanded by Brussels, he said that active negotiations were underway with neighboring countries, including Romania, as well as companies supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the market. The required infrastructure, meaning cross-border pipelines, is also in place, Kapitany added.
"Therefore, gas supplies to Hungary are guaranteed for next October due to excellent import infrastructure and the availability of diverse sources. If the situation unfolds as currently expected, Hungary’s gas needs can and will be met from other sources. That said, it remains to be seen whether this will be needed as it is difficult to predict how events will develop," the Hungarian minister noted.
