Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports has invited the public to celebrate International Museum Day on May 18 and take part in the pan-European “Museum Night” initiative on May 16.
International Museum Day is observed annually on May 18. This year’s theme, “Museums Unite a Fragmented World,” highlights the important role museums play as platforms for cultural dialogue, mutual understanding, and the preservation and transmission of universal values.
Joining the international initiative, museums across Armenia will organize a wide range of events, including exhibitions, educational programs, workshops, public discussions, and special tours designed for visitors of different age groups and interests.
As part of the celebrations, one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year — “Museum Night” — will take place on May 16. On that day, numerous museums throughout Armenia will remain open to visitors free of charge from 11:00 a.m. until midnight, offering special cultural programs and interactive activities.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore museum collections in a unique nighttime setting, participate in interactive events, and enjoy a rich cultural atmosphere.
According to the ministry, the initiative aims to encourage public interest in cultural heritage, strengthen the connection between museums and society, and emphasize the role of culture in building a united and harmonious community.
On May 18, museums participating in the International Museum Day program will also welcome visitors according to their regular opening hours.
International Museum Day was established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to raise public awareness about the vital role museums play in society and to unite museums around global challenges facing humanity.
The “Museum Night” initiative was launched in 2005 by France’s Ministry of Culture and Communication under the patronage of ICOM, UNESCO, and the Council of Europe. Armenia joined the European-wide event in 2005.
