The Azerbaijani side is highly interested in what awaits Armenia in the upcoming parliamentary elections, because to a large extent the future of the peace process depends precisely on that variable, said Areg Kochinyan, President and Coordinator of the Armenian Council analytical center, during a press conference.
“Let’s speak frankly: at this moment, the biggest variable in the peace process is Armenia’s parliamentary elections. If the elections were taking place in Azerbaijan, that would be the variable,” he noted.
Elaborating on this, Areg Kochinyan said: “On the one hand, there is a fairly solidly formed contractual, legal, and political basis for peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This is the Peace Agreement, which has been initialed and is to be signed and ratified. This is the delimitation and demarcation process between the two countries, the regulations of whose commissions have been approved by both sides, all legal processes have been completed, the commissions have been formed, and they are working. This is the process of unblocking communications, for which documents have also already been signed, and this is, first of all, naturally, TRIPP. This is the legal and contractual foundation. Alongside this, there is also a certain political element—that, yes, a certain level of ability and capacity to work together has been formed between the governments of the two countries.
It is very important what positions and attitudes the political forces participating in the elections in Armenia express toward the entire framework I have mentioned, because after the elections, issues of peace and war will essentially be decided by the force that wins in Armenia.”
