We have entered a phase where the North–South project is gaining flesh and blood. This year we will already open the Gyumri–Yerevan section of the North–South road, which is now practically ready; only furnishing work needs to be done. The Agarak–Kajaran section is also being constructed at a very high pace. Very active discussions are currently under way on the construction of the Sisian–Kajaran section, and the project for building the Bargushat Tunnel is also of special importance, for which we are entering the final stage. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this during a conference on regional cooperation.
“In this context, I consider extremely important that another historic event has taken place: for the first time since Armenia’s independence, freight has entered the Republic of Armenia from Russia and Kazakhstan via the Azerbaijani railway, of course so far via the Azerbaijan–Georgia–Armenia route.
During Soviet times, we had direct railway connections with Azerbaijan through Tavush Province and Syunik Province. I also want to draw your attention to the fact that the Republic of Armenia has expressed readiness, as of today, to ensure the transit of cargo trucks from Turkey through Margara, Kornidzor to Azerbaijan, and in the opposite direction.
Why are we offering this now? Because today this infrastructure is ready; in all other sections, which I will talk about, our political readiness also exists, but in those places we simply still have investments to make,” he said.
The train loaded with Kazakh wheat is in Armenia, having passed through the territories of Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.
Recently, wheat purchased from the Russian Federation was also transported to Armenia by train through the territories of Azerbaijan and Georgia.
