The European Commission has not invited Georgia to the first EU enlargement forum because Tbilisi is backing away from necessary reforms and democracy.to announceis Guillaume Mercier, spokesperson of the European Commission.
"Last week we presented our expansion report, which was about Georgia. Our position is clearly expressed there. The enlargement report shows that Georgia is moving away from the European path. The report mentions a retreat of reforms, and this is an unprecedented situation for a candidate country. It has worsened in recent months, and we see that things related to democracy are going badly," he said.
Mercier reminded that the European Council stated in its conclusions that the process of Georgia's accession to the European Union was actually stopped. The European Commission now has fewer contacts with the Georgian authorities.
The European Commission's first enlargement forum will take place on 18 November 2025 in Brussels. The event will be chaired by Enlargement Commissioner Martha Kos. European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as well as Defense and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, will attend.
