Reuters. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday (October 06) that he had a "very good" telephone call with Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and that the two leaders would likely exchange visits in the near future.
Speaking to reporters Trump said he spoke to Lula briefly at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and they “like each other”.
“Yeah, we'll start doing business,” Trump said.
Brazil's government confirmed Monday’s call earlier, which boosts prospects for a thaw in bilateral relations that are at their worst in decades.
The two leaders have been at odds for months over the trial and conviction of Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro. Trump hiked a tariff on many Brazilian goods from 10% to 50% because of the case, which he called a "witch hunt."
