A 60-year-old man has been arrested in Australia Monday after firing up to 100 shots at pedestrians, injuring 20 people in one of the country’s most densely populated cities, CBS News reports.
According to New South Wales Police, officers were called on Sunday evening to a street in Sydney’s Inner West after reports that an armed suspect was randomly shooting at cars and police officers.
One man was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds and remains in critical condition, police said. Another 19 people were injured by shrapnel and shattered glass, with several requiring hospital treatment.
New South Wales Police Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry stated that between 50 and 100 shots were fired in the Croydon Park suburb on Sunday evening.
A large police presence sealed off the area and closed surrounding streets before entering a building above a business, where they arrested the 60-year-old suspect. Two firearms were seized at the scene.
The suspect was also hospitalized to receive treatment for injuries sustained during his arrest, police said. As of now, no charges have been filed against him.
