U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday (August 22) that in two weeks he should know whether progress is possible in his bid to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine and he again raised the prospect of imposing sanctions on Moscow, Reuters reports.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said "I'm not happy" with any aspect of the effort to find peace. A week ago Trump held talks in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has been unable thus far to coax him into a meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
"We'll see what happens. I think over the next two weeks, we're going to find out which way it's going to go, and I better be very happy. But we'll see what happens. I think in two weeks we'll know which way I'm going. Because I'm going to go one way or the other, and they'll learn which way I'm going."
He said he would decide in two weeks whether to impose "massive sanctions" or do nothing and say "it's your fight."
"Then I'm going to make a decision as to what we do. And it's going to be a very important decision. And that's whether or not it's massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both. Or do we do nothing and say 'it's your fight'?" Trump said.
