The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) hopes that the documents signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington will serve as the basis for a peace agreement, CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev said, TASS reports.
“Just as all of us in the Commonwealth of Independent States countries welcomed the signing of the interstate border agreement between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, so now we welcomed the signing of this joint declaration. We believe that this is one of the phases on the path to the final settlement of differences and the signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Lebedev said.
He added that the peace agreement “will enable holding more full-fledged meetings within the highest CIS bodies on the territory of these republics.”
"As Secretary General, I hope that these states can participate more actively in the activities of the Commonwealth of Independent States," Lebedev emphasized.
