In the event of an unsuccessful outcome of the Russian-American summit in Alaska, Washington may strengthen sanctions. This was announced on August 13 by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant.
"We have imposed secondary duties on India for the purchase of Russian oil. And I can assume that if things go badly, sanctions or secondary duties may be increased," he said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
Bessent clarified that sanctions can be either tightened or weakened. According to him, restrictions may also have a limited duration or be indefinite.
In addition, the head of the US Treasury Department again called on European countries to join the secondary duties of the United States against Russia. He noted that at the moment the moment has come to "act or remain silent."
