German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul welcomed the signing of a joint declaration by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia, noting that Berlin is ready to support Yerevan and Baku on their path toward lasting peace.
“Today, Armenia and Azerbaijan are opening a new chapter in their history. The fact that both countries initiated a peace treaty in Washington at the initiative of the U.S. President [Donald] Trump is a source of hope for many people in Armenia and Azerbaijan, who look back on a long history of conflicts, displacement, and suffering,” Wadephul told journalists. “Today’s events demonstrate the willingness of both governments to address difficult issues through negotiations and to make challenging compromises,” he added.
The head of Germany’s foreign ministry emphasized that Germany, together with its partners, has long been actively supporting the settlement of the conflict through diplomatic means. “For several years, we have facilitated confidence-building measures between the two countries, provided humanitarian aid worth €27.5 million, and deployed civilian personnel to the South Caucasus, in particular to the EU mission in Armenia,” Wadephul noted. “It is now crucial that the peace agreement be signed and ratified by both governments as soon as possible. Germany remains ready to support Armenia and Azerbaijan on their path to lasting peace,” the minister concluded.
