In Serbia, on the night of June 30, hundreds of protesters blocked several important streets in the country’s capital and erected barricades as part of an anti-government protest, AP reports.
Hundreds of people, tent camps and barricades made of garbage cans can be seen on the streets and intersections of the Serbian capital. The Gazela Bridge over the Sava River is blocked.
Similar actions were held in other cities in Serbia.
The AP estimates the number of protesters in Belgrade at several thousand.
The action is being organized by the student protest group “Blokada”. Hundreds of thousands of people have signed up on social media. The protesters published a map of Belgrade, highlighting the points where they called for people to come and block the streets.
On Sunday, June 29, Serbian law enforcement officials reported that 48 officers were injured during the protests, and 22 protesters sought medical attention.
Of the 77 detainees, 38 remained in custody, most facing criminal charges. At least eight people were detained as of June 30.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called the rioters “terrorists” and criticized the rector of the University of Belgrade, Vladan Jokic, who is participating in the rallies.
