Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said “maximum efforts” were being made to relieve conditions amid “unprecedentedly heavy snowfall” over the past several days in the country’s western Guria region,
agenda.ge reports.
In his comments after a coordination meeting in the region, Kobakhidze noted clearing works had been “actively carried out” on roads.
As locals say, the last time there was a heavy snowfall of this scale in the region was in 1972. Accordingly, you can judge for yourself how large the scale of the disaster is”, he said.
All agencies have been mobilised, including the army since yesterday, to ensure that these works are completed within the required timeframe. Difficulties and problems remain, but the agencies continue to work with full mobilisation”, he added.
The PM said evacuation of citizens had been “less relevant as an intervention measure”, but stressed the importance of “reaching every village” to provide on-the-ground assistance, adding there were cases of road clearance works taking more than a single day, and rescuers and defence personnel had to use alternative routes to assist residents.
