Pope Francis' respiratory tract infection has required a modification of his treatment to tackle a "complex clinical situation" and he will remain in hospital as long as is necessary, the Vatican said on Monday (February 17), Reuters reports.
Pope Francis was hospitalized on Friday morning (February 14) for tests and to continue the treatment of his ongoing bronchitis, the Vatican said in a statement.
Francis, 88, has been pope since 2013 and has suffered from influenza and other health problems several times over the past two years.
The week previously, Francis told pilgrims at the weekly audience that he was suffering from a "strong cold," which the Vatican later described as bronchitis.
