Reuters. There have been no reports of abnormalities at nuclear power plants following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that hit Japan on Thursday (August 8), Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters in Tokyo.
The quake occurred at around 4:43 p.m. (0743 GMT) off the coast of Miyazaki prefecture on the western island of Kyushu.
Authorities issued a tsunami warning following the quake, forecasting a tsunami of up to 1 metre in height. Waves as high as 50 cm (20 inches) were observed in Miyazaki, Japan's public broadcaster NHK said.
