Turkey loses 642 million tons of land every year due to erosion. The statement came from Deniz Ataç, head of the Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion (TEMA), Ermenihaber reports.
“Every year, about 75 billion tons of soil in the world is eroded, which means that every 5 seconds the size of one football field disappears. Unfortunately, 642 million tons of soil is eroded in our country every year,” Ataç said, adding that it takes 500 years for 1 centimeter of soil to form, while Turkey loses 1 centimeter of soil in 15 years.
