Hundreds of firefighters, mountain rescuers, police, pilots and local officials were mobilised Monday after severe rainstorms hit parts of northeastern Romania causing floods.
Three elderly people were reportedly killed in flash floods that damaged thousands of homes, uprooted trees, swept away cars, and damaged roads and bridges. The victims were killed in the village of Neagra, Suceava County.
Officials said flooding affected 25 localities across nine counties, with hundreds of people evacuated.
Neamt and Suceava counties were the worst affected after two rivers burst their banks. Rescue teams and helicopters were deployed to assist stranded residents.
On Monday evning, Romania's Department for Emergency Situations gave a summery of the effects of the weather in Neamț County and Suceava County:
Neamț County: About 270 households in three localities were affected, with 890 people evacuated or self-evacuated. As waters receded on July 28, residents returned home while crews pumped water from 48 households and planned further cleanup.
Suceava County: Over 200 households in Broșteni, Neagra, Dârmoxa, Ostra, and Stulpicani were flooded. Emergency teams rescued 205 people—120 by air and 85 by ground—with support from five helicopters.
