Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Robert Abisoghomonyan met in Paris with UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences Lidia Brito.
The meeting addressed preparatory work for the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), which will be held in Armenia in 2026, as well as initiatives planned within the framework of the Conference, the Foreign Ministry said in a readout.
The Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring high-level participation in the Leaders’ Summit and the High-Level Ministerial Segment to be held during the Conference.
He also highlighted UNESCO’s key role in addressing global environmental challenges, including efforts to conserve biodiversity. In this context, the two sides exchanged views on the prospects for UNESCO’s involvement in COP17 and on joint initiatives.
The importance of UNESCO’s active participation in the thematic events planned within the Conference was also emphasized, in particular the “Nature and Culture” Summit and the “Education Day” thematic event. The “Yerevan Dialogue on Mountain and Freshwater Biodiversity,” planned within the framework of the Conference, was also highlighted as an important platform for cooperation.
