Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country has been waiting at the door of the European Union for 52 years.
According to him, Ankara is ready to give the necessary answer when the time comes. At the same time, as the politician pointed out during the ceremony of awarding the Highest Order of the Turkic World, the republic “still continues to do the same thing.”
Meanwhile, Erdogan is not yet ready to agree to Sweden joining NATO. According to him, the Swedish authorities are taking “positive steps” in the right direction, but further steps are needed for membership in the alliance.
Turkey signed an association agreement with the EU in 1963. In 1987, the republic officially announced its desire to become a member of the European Union. Negotiations to accept Ankara began in 2005.
