№1 University Hospital is the oldest medical center in Armenia, which is already 100 years old today. In 1906 Yerevan municipal duma summoned a session, where the issue on obtaining money for construction of the hospital was discussed. When the site for construction was being discussed, one of the known cognac producers donated his lands and put forth conditions for the construction in front of authorities. Nikolay Shustov was the first to propose his private 2-hecture territory by the condition that he would take it back if it was not built within 2 years.
The architect of this important building is Tiflis-based Armenian Poghos Zorabyan. His plan intended 6 buildings, but only one was built. Over 20 clinics work in №1 Hospital. It has always been the first both by its number and significance. Even after 100 years it continues to remain one of the speaking monuments of Yerevan.
