On November 12, in Belém, Brazil, within the framework of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Armenia, ahead of its Presidency of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, organized a side event entitled “Delivering on climate and biodiversity action: Leveraging COP30 outcomes in Belém for COP17 in Yerevan.” The event was organized jointly with Brazil, Colombia, Panama and Germany, as well as in cooperation with civil society organizations and academic institutions from Bangladesh, Australia, the United Kingdom and India.
The event focused on issues on strengthening the links between the Paris Agreement of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, with the aim of promoting coherence, cooperation and synergy among the three Rio environmental conventions. Participants, in particular, touched upon a wide range of topics concerning the interlinkages between climate change and biodiversity loss, emphasizing the need for coordinated global action to address the existing challenges.
Special attention was given to localizing global commitments through concrete and measurable actions at the national and local levels. Participants underscored the importance of cross-sectoral cooperation and inclusivity, with the participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, as well as the use of science and technology to effectively solve climate and biodiversity issues.
Participants also emphasized the need for closer coordination among international conventions, institutions and policy frameworks, aimed at ensuring the effective review of the implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Framework during COP17, to be held in Yerevan in 2026.
The event reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment, as the incoming President of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, to promoting coherence and mutual interoperability between the global processes of combating climate change and conserving biodiversity, thereby contributing to the development of a holistic, inclusive, and action-oriented agenda.
