U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Russia and is expected to meet President Vladimir Putin on Friday, Axios reported, citing a source familiar with the trip and FlightRadar data, Reuters reports.
Following his Russian visit he is expected to travel on to Oman as the United States and Iran are set to hold direct talks to discuss Tehran's nuclear programme at a meeting in Oman on Saturday (April 12).
The weekend talks are expected to be lead by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on the Iranian side and Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff for the U.S.
A source briefed on U.S. planning for the talks confirmed that Witkoff would lead the U.S. delegation and that the discussions would be broad in the search for a nuclear deal and would not be technical in nature.
Iranian officials told Reuters the country was approaching the talks warily, with little confidence in progress and deep suspicions over U.S. intentions.
The talks were announced on Monday (April 7) by President Trump, who has repeatedly threatened Washington's old foe Iran with military action if it does not agree to a deal since he returned to the White House in January.
